Marine Engineering Scholarship
In coordination with the Aboitiz Group Foundation, Inc., Aboitiz Jebsen provides scholarships for marine engineering (MarE) students. Launched in June 1996, MarE scholarship programs are offered to financially-challenged but academically qualified students. The program presently has 18 scholars at the University of Cebu and eight at DMMA College of Southern Philippines in Davao.

Cadetship program
Since 1995, ABOJEB has accommodated engineering students from the cadet programs of Norwegian Shipowners’ Association (NSA) and Philippine-Japan Manning Consultative Council, Inc. (PJMCC). To date, the program has produced 135 licensed officers while 292 cadets are actively registered. In January 2008, ABOJEB partnered with PNTC Colleges of Dasmariñas, Cavite to offer its cadet graduates apprenticeship and employment onboard its owned or managed vessels.

Benefits and recognition
Aside from benefits given by their respective principals such as bonuses and incentives, sponsored trainings, financial assistance to obtain higher licenses and other value-added benefits such as rice subsidy, hotel accommodation and domestic air tickets, ABOJEB seafarers also enjoy family welfare services from the company. The crew can rely on the assistance of the Crew and Family Welfare section which handles the administration of health insurance coverage for them and their dependents; facilitation of retirement claims and hospital endorsements to AMOSUP; organization of learning seminars on savings, investment, business opportunities and teambuilding activities; formation of seafarers and families’ association; coordination with medical networks for free medical consultation and basic laboratory tests for crew and families; prompt endorsement of packages sent by relatives for seafarers onboard; and the hosting of a grand Seafarers’ and Families’ Christmas Party every year, complete with entertainment from showbiz personalities, popular bands, plenty of exciting raffle prizes and a lavish dinner in a 5-star hotel, no less. Recently, it also launched its car plan for its domestic fleet where its Top 2 officers can avail of a car plan.

ABOJEB also maintains a dedicated website for its seafarers and their families where news, maritime updates, invitations, health tips, and even personal contributions can be viewed. It also has links to various useful sites such as SSS, Philhealth, Pagibig, OWWA and, the very innovative but highly secure seafarers’ online payslip accessible with a password anytime, anywhere. It has also tied up with SmartLink for the provision of a satellite-based communication system where the seafarers may communicate with their families back home even while at seas. The unit is provided to the vessel free of charge.

ABOJEB also provides attractive incentives to its seafarers and their families and relatives for referring new officers who get successfully deployed to any vessel under the ABOJEB fleet.

Recognition for seafarers is given top priority at Aboitiz Jebsen. Loyal officers and crew are given service awards every year while those who successfully pass the board exams for higher licenses are regulary recognized during their oathtaking ceremonies and given special tokens.

Corporate Social Responsibility
ABOJEB also actively engages in corporate social responsibility. It has been supporting the activities of Mama’s Hope Haven of Norway, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, which helps less privileged families in Cavite. In May 2009, ABOJEB, through Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. donated P1M for the construction of Mama’s Hope Hospital of Mercy in Cavite. It aims to address the needs of the poor residents of Cavite and the nearby provinces for quality medical treatment and care. Hospital of Mercy intends to operate with part- and full-time staff and student volunteers from Norway and the Philippines.

Outreach activities
Among the most memorable cause-oriented activities ABOJEB had were its relief operations from Oct. 2 – Nov. 14, 2010 for the victims of typhoons Ondoy, the worst tropical depression the Philippines ever had, Pepeng and Santi. ABOJEB reached out to about 150 families giving them donation ranging from cash, distilled water, rice and various grocery items and cleaning materials to reconstruction of damaged properties. In 2008, ABOJEB also initiated a similar activity to assist the victims of typhoon Frank in the far-flung Antique. The company gathered 13 large boxes of edible goods and clothings which were sent to the province and distributed through the assistance of its Abojeb Seafarers and Allottee’s Association-Iloilo-Negros Chapter officers. In 2007, ABOJEB donated cash and used books and clothings to Marine Engineer Officers’ Association of the Philippines (MEOAP) and joined the group in its annual outreach activity dubbed “Bigay Puso Gift-Giving Activity” for the Aeta community in Sapang Bato, Angeles, Pampanga. In 2005, ABOJEB went to Infanta, Quezon and distributed three Army six-by-six truckloads of goods to more than 1,000 family unit victims of the massive killer landslide in the province.

Abojeb ISO 9001:2008 renewed

The Aboitiz Jebsen Group of Companies has successfully renewed its ISO Certification on Quality Management Systems for 2010.

Abojeb is now certified under the new version ISO 9001:2008. It has maintained the ISO 9001:2000 certification since 2004.

The audit, held April 5 in Cebu and April 6-8 in Manila, was conducted by American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) headed by Singaporean national Kuay Siong Ng as lead auditor and assisted by Alvaro Souza, a Filipino.

The certification covers all business units under the Aboitiz Jebsen umbrella which includes Jebsens Maritime, Inc. (JMI) and EMS Crew Management Phils., Inc. (for Crewing Division); Harbor Training Center, Inc. (HTCI) (for Training Division); the Shipping Division; and all the Support Groups – Employee Care and General Services (ECGS), Information System (IS) and Finance.  The Abojeb ISO 9001:2008 official certificate is now in process.

This year’s audit was tougher compared to previous years’ since it was a renewal of certification apart from an application for the new version ISO 9001:2008.  Despite this, Abojeb passed the audit with only one minor non-conformity and several opportunities for improvement.

The company aims to prioritize in the coming years the continual improvement on audit compliance focusing on the goal of becoming the “Preferred Maritime Partner”.

Aboitiz Jebsen crew conferred Outstanding Seafarer Award

Aboitiz Jebsen (Abojeb) seafarer, Electrical Engineer Demosthenes Quiñones was recently chosen as one of three Outstanding Filipino Seafarers by the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment.

Quiñones was conferred the award at the Philippine International Convention Center last June 22, 2010 by IMO Secretary General Efthimios Mitropoulos together with Labor Undersecretary Romeo Lagman.  He was represented by wife, Josephine. Quiñones received a certificate of recognition and a P300,000-prize.

The Outstanding Filipino Seafarer Awards (TOFSA) was launched nationwide last April by DOLE through the Maritime Training Council as the attached agency involved in the project, in cooperation with the private sectors such as the: Associated Marine Officers and Seamen Union of the Philippines (AMOSUP); Joint Manning Group; Filipino Association for Mariners’ Employment (FAME); Philippine Association of Maritime Training Centers, Inc. (PAMTCI); Marine Engine Officers of the Philippines (MEOAP); Masters and Mates Association of the Philippines (MMAP); Conference of Maritime Manning Agencies (COMMA); Philippine Association of Manning Agencies (PAMA); and United Filipino Seafarers (UFS) to commemorate IMO's designating 2010 as the Year of the Seafarer.

An article on the awards launch said, “The Filipino seafarers have continuously shown competency and proficiency in the international maritime industry and for this reason, the Philippines has become the largest and most viable source of shipping crews around the world. It is likewise an utmost recognition that they have become the most professional, reputable, adaptable, and capable individuals working in shipping vessels of foreign flags. Their demonstration of excellence and world – class expertise has earned them a reputation as the most preferred choice of international shipping employers. Having mentioned all these, it is proper that the Philippine government recognize the vital role of our Filipino seafarers in our growth as a nation. It is hoped that through this, the government will be able to further the incessant enhancement of the competency and proficiency of our seafarers.”

Out of 26 seafarers nominated by various manning agencies and organizations, only three were selected to receive the prestigious award.

The ceremonies were attended by hundreds of delegates to the International Diplomatic Conference of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) held in Manila from June 21 to 25, 2010.  The cash prize was courtesy of Smart Communications.

Abojeb was specially elated by the citation given to Quiñones by the screening committee:

'Mr. Quiñones enhanced the image of Filipino seafarers through his consistent exemplary   work performance as Electrician Officer.  Mr. Quiñones has proved equal to the challenge of rendering service as Electrical Officer onboard the old Frankfurt Express, a challenging   vessel which other engine ratings, engineers and electrician avoid due to high expectations required from its crew.  He was instrumental in the design of training programs for new    electricians especially for those with landbased experiences and acted as screening and training officer for would-be electricians undergoing training based on European standards.'

Quiñones, currently onboard Hapag Lloyd’s container ship Rotterdam Express as Electrician Officer, has been with Jebsens Maritime Inc. for 13 years.

Personal Background

Demosthenes Quiñones is a licensed electrical engineer who has been onboard Hapag Lloyd vessels for more than eight years. He has maintained an excellent performance onboard where he gained thorough knowledge on the specific equipment and facilities of Hapag Lloyd vessels. Prior his sea service, he started his career as production manager at Citizens Radio and Electronics Corp. of the Philippines right after finishing Radio Telephony and Communication Technology course. He then became the company’s quality control section head then research and development head. He moved to Lyn-Ann Electronics and Service Center ashead electronic technician while finishing his bachelor degree in electrical engineer at Central Colleges of the Philippines. He was an active president of the Philippine Association of Mechanical and Electrical Engineers student chapter then.  He topped the licensure exam of Professional Regulation Commission for electrical engineers in 1989.

Quiñones is currently the electrician officer onboard Rotterdam Express, a Hapag Lloyd vessel trading worldwide.

EMS Mock Internal Audit for M/V Jakarta Bridge
A glance of M/V Jakarta Bridge

Simply put, quality audits are performed to evaluate the quality of a system. However, for Aboitiz Jebsen, the thrust is to position “quality” to the next level.  Keenly aware of the importance of safe vessel operation and the preservation of the global environment, we strive to achieve the highest-possible levels of safety by adopting Environmental Management System (EMS) as a planning tool that may prevent unacceptable operational risks associated with the environmental activities to be undertaken.

Ship Management conducted a mock internal audit for M/V Jakarta Bridge on February 6, 2010 with the objective of verifying the level of conformance to ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Systems (EMS).  The internal audit aims to attain its purpose in securing an ISO 14001:2004 certificate for all Abojeb international managed vessels.  The existing environmental management activities are integrated into the EMS.  The current reference documents used in the audit such as Garbage Management Plan, SOPEP, Ballast Management Plan and QMS manuals are incorporated into overall EMS, and EMS serves as a management framework.

There were three audit teams composed of three auditors per team.  Team 1’s lead auditor is C/E Ronald Perena with Captains Henrik Baes and Jess Tomagan.  Team 2 is led by Chief Erden Ferrer, with C/E Leofrank Castrence and Chief Edwin Tabo.  Team 3 is composed of Capt. Steve Terazona as the lead auditor, with C/E Venrose Valenzuela and Ira Rambano as part of the team.  Mr. Raul Liangco of ECCI (EMS trainor) served as the facilitator and Lete Clores as an observer.

The auditees, among the officers and crew are selected based on the interview questions.  The core auditee represents Capt. Oro Dilao, C/E Arturo Mogar, C/O Bonifacio Ragas, 2/E Rex Lagnaoda.

We begin the audit by having a kickoff meeting to mark the start of the audit.  The meeting have audit teams in attendance, clarify scope, goals, and schedule; review how the audit will be conducted, and confirm the readiness of the auditee.

The audit team performed due diligence by collecting evidence about the EMS system specifically on emergency preparedness, control of documents, and operating control both in deck and engine.

The audit interview lasted for more than two hours. The audit report resulted to find eight audit findings and in summary, it evolved to the lack of awareness on part of the complements contributed to the findings and insufficient documents to support the EMS.

It is recommended that the focus of the EMS project team will be on these two items.

Vinashin and Jebsens

VINASHIN AND JEBSENS ENTER INTO COMPREHENSIVE JOINT VENTURE FOR SHIPOWNING, SHIP OPERATIONS AND PROJECT DEVELOPMENTS.

During a recent visit to Hanoi by a Jebsens delegation, Mr. Pham Thanh Binh - Chairman and CEO of Vinashin and Mr Atle Jebsen - Chairman of the Jebsen Group signed an extensive joint venture Agreement between Vinashin and the Atle Jebsen company.  This was a follow up and conclusion of the Heads of Agreement which was signed in Oslo during the Vietnamese State visit to Norway by the President Mr. Nguyen Minh Triet, in June 2008.

The joint venture includes the establishment of a new company, named CALYPSO, to be owned 50/50 and will have its commercial operation out of Singapore whilst Head office, Ship management and crewing will be performed in Hanoi .  At the start of the operation the staff will be assigned from Vinashin and Jebsens.  The company will perform ship owning, chartering and operations, technical management as well as crewing and will be operated as a separate entity with its own management.  Trading of vessels will start January 1, 2009 , with mini handy size ships from Vinashin and Jebsens in South East Asia .

The Joint Venture Company has entered into shipbuilding contracts with Vinashin for the construction of six 24,500dwt geared bulk carriers of the “CALYPSO25” design, with an option for a further six vessels.  The ships will be built at two of the state-owned Vinashin’s shipyards in Southern Vietnam - Cam Ranh Shipyard, Nha Trang and Soai Rap Shipbuilding Industry Corp/Nhon Trach Shipyard, Ho Chi Minh City .  The last two ships will be built at Thinh Long Shipyard, Nam Dinh Province - this yard is a joint stock yard between Vinashin as major share and private Vietnamese investors. All the six “CALYPSO25” vessels will be delivered before the end of 2010.

These new buildings are of the “CALYPSO25” design, which Vinashin and Jebsens as well as DNV, Marcon AS and Rolls-Royce have developed over some months.  The design comprises a considerable number of environmental improvements, especially in regard to the engines, the propulsion and the “new” Promas rudder system. The design lines have been tested at the model tank of Shanghai Ship Research and Development Corp, and the results show a substantially reduced fuel-consumption compared to traditional rudder systems and conventional Bulkcarriers design lines.

The ships will be operated by the Singapore Company when they are delivered.  They are designed for world wide trading with DNV class, but will likely be traded in South East Asia with Vietnamese crew.

Mr Atle Jebsen has been elected Chairman of the Board of Directors of the joint venture company.  Other Board Members are Mr Pham Thanh Binh - Chairman and CEO of Vinashin, plus two more Board Members to be appointed by Vinashin, Mr Birger Myklebust - President of Odim Asia Pte.Ltd., Mr Salve Sandvik - Senior Vice President of Jebsens.

Mr Michael Oliver Ross, Managing Director of Jebsens Australia , has been appointed President of the joint venture company.

The agreement between the two Parties recognises Vinashin’s goal of enhancing both the management and technical skills of its workforce by including a comprehensive Knowledge Transfer Plan through the joint venture company.  This will be done in several disciplines including crew training and on board management.

The successful implementation of this joint venture has been made possible through a close co-operation with our Partners in design, classification, main equipment vendors, commercial and semi government financial institutions.

This joint venture will focus on construction, ownership and trading of conventional mini handy size bulk carriers, but does recognise that there are several areas which will be considered going forward.  Being the largest shipbuilder and industrial conglomerate in Vietnam , the Vinashin Group not only represents approximately 80% of the domestic shipbuilding capacity, but also a diversified spectrum of products which includes ship repair, shipping and logistics, heavy industries, civil and offshore constructions, financial and research service. With a corporate structure currently overseeing more than 200 subsidiaries and affiliates with more than 30 shipyards which employ an overall headcount of 85,000 people, Vinashin Group is by far among the most active industry player in Vietnam and also being considered a new yet potentially powerful participant in the international market.

PNTC Colleges, shipping firm partnership aims to turn out marine officers

To address the prevailing global shortage of marine officers, PNTCColleges and Aboitiz Jebsen Bulk Transport Corporation (ABOJEB) forged a partnership in order to tackle the problem from the source.

It has been identified that the prevailing shortage is caused by several factors mainly, the demand for new marine officers because of the new buildings (vessels), the continual development or changes in technology which would require new trainings and competence of existing seafarers and the reduction of the volume of seafarers due to retirement, medical repatriation and lack of competence to adopt to the new technology.

Ole Stene, Managing Director of ABOJEB said, “It is only but logical to attack the root cause of the problem from the source, which is the maritime school.”  It is his opinion that the Philippines will continue to be the number one provider of competent officers and crew as long as the educational system is able to attract young people to dedicate themselves as seafarers.

Ninety percent of all trade is carried by ships and will continue to be carried by ships.  Shipping is a high competence industry, and if this collapses because of lack of competent seafarers, the world will collapse.

In this context, it is extremely important to stress that an education as seafarer, engine officer or deck officer, is an attractive education that offers huge career possibilities such as ship superintendents and crew managers or even higher positions like President of a Manning Agency.

Atty. Hernani N. Fabia, President of PNTC Colleges on his part said, “From the beginning, our objective was clear – to produce highly employable and world-class marine officers.”  In this regard PNTC embarked on a Nine Point Agenda as their 3-year Plan that includes primarily, Advancement of Technology, Enhancement of Curriculum and Development of Competence of our Faculty.

“Hopefully, within this year we will have an academic cooperation with the University of Applied Science in Bremen, Germany.  This academic cooperation will enable us to enhance further our curriculum in order to be at par with global standards,” added Atty. Fabia.

PNTC Colleges held its 3rd Recognition Rites on 19 April 2008 at The Orchard Golf and Country Club, Dasmariñas, Cavite.

The Theme “Sharing Responsibilities in Attaining Professional Excellence” is apt to the objective of the partnership between PNTCColleges and ABOJEB.

It was stressed by Atty. Fabia that, “We could not do it alone, we need to have shared responsibilities or linkages from various sectors such as the academe, ship owners/ship managers and the government to do their share in ensuring professional excellence of our seafarers”.

Mr. Ole B. Stene, Managing Director of Aboitiz-Jebsen Bulk Transport Corporation and President of InterManager was the special Guest Speaker.

The Vietnam Project

At the Vietship 2008 Exhibition in Hanoi , Jebsens signed a Letter of Intent for a number of Bulkcarriers of about 24,500 tons with Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin), Hanoi , Vietnam .

The ships will be built at two of the state-owned holding companies' shipyards in Southern Vietnam - Cam Rahn Shipyard, Nha Trang & Soiarap Shipbuilding Industry Corp/Nhon Trach Shipyard, Ho Chi Min City.

These new buildings are of the CALYPSO25 design, which Jebsens together with DNV, Marcon and Rolls-Royce over some months have developed together with Vinashin.  The design comprises large environmental improvements, especially in the engines, the propulsion and the Promas rudder system. The design lines have been tested at the model tank of Shanghai Ship Research and Development Corp, and the results give a reduced fuel-consumption of 3 - 6% (different ballast conditions) compared to traditional rudder systems and conventional Bulkcarriers design lines.

The ships will be owned in a 50/50 Joint Venture with Vinashin.

There are still some subjects to the Letter of Intent and some way to go before the new buildings will become a reality.  Delivery of the ships will take place in 2010 and 2011.

The company is doing this in order to continue using our competence in developing the

Bulkcarrier-trade.

Aboitiz-Jebsen, PNTC Colleges ink cadetship program

RESPONDING to the call of the government for a solution to the shortage of ship officers and high quality seafarers, Aboitiz-Jebsen Bulk Transport Corp. (ABOJEB) and PNTCColleges in Dasmariñas, Cavite, have come up with a program that will ensure the training of cadets to become world-class officers and crew.

The program, which will be covered by a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between ABOJEB and PNTC Colleges, will not only assume shipboard training to PNTC graduates, but will also ensure their employment onboard ships owned or managed by members of InterManager, an international trade organization of ship and crew managers.

The MOA will be signed on January 31 at the Elks Club in MakatiCity by PNTC president lawyer Hernani N. Fabia, and ABOJEB managing director Ole Stene.

Norwegian Ambassador to the Philippines Stale Torstein Riza will witness the signing, together with Philippine Ports Authority manager Oscar M. Sevilla.

Stene who is also the president of InterManager, disclosed that his organization manages or controls over 3,000 ships and employs more than 100,000 seafarers worldwide.

For his part, Fabia said that PNTC Colleges has one of the most advance facilities for the education and training of Filipino cadets.

At the same time, he noted that the MOA “is the culmination of our efforts to guide PNTC Colleges’ graduates in starting their career path in the right direction so that they can attain individual success and professional achievement.”

During the recent Lloyd’s Manning Conference held in Manila last November, Stene made a major presentation to address the growing shortage of qualified officers and crew.

In that presentation, he stressed the importance of training as a solution to the problem of manning shortages.

Likewise, Stene emphasized the need to be more serious about the quality of maritime schools to ensure that they meet standards laid down by the industry as well as by the STCW convention.

PNTC Colleges was originally established as a maritime-training center in 1994.

It has been on the cutting edge of maritime training and education offering both bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation and Marine Engineering.

GAS SHANGHAI, while sailing towards Tanjung Sulong Malaysia at 1400 LT, saw flare coming from the burning Ilala yacht.  Standby instructions were immediately issued to the Engine Room and crew were mustered for rescue operations while Safety Message to all vessels in the vicinity was broadcast.  TESMA Singapore, the vessel’s technical manager, was informed about the rescue operations including necessary security precautions against piracy.

The passengers of Ilala were found in a liferaft and successfully recovered.

Reports showed that Ilala was in a voyage in a thurderstorm heading to Phuket, Thailand from Port Blair, India with Johnson couple as only passengers.  A lightning apparently hit the yacht which eventually triggered fire.  Paul searched inside the yacht hoping to contain the fire but the fire spread very rapidly.  As the yacht began to be filled with thick, noxious fumes and clearly went beyond control, the passengers, taking with them their “grab bags”, safety equipment, food, water, portable navigation equipment and valuables, abandoned to the liferaft and swam away from the burning yacht.  They continued to send signals, deploying red rocket flare and continued to make MAYDAY calls until rescued by GAS SHANGHAI at about 1510 LT.

GAS SHANGHAI subsequently informed TESMA Singapore and all vessels in the vicinity about the successful rescue operations and Safety Message was again broadcast to end the operations.

The rescued passengers expressed their sincere gratitude to the captain, officers and crew of MV GAS SHANGHAI for saving their lives and having shown exemplary seamanship and professionalism during the rescue operations and extending every possible courtesy and hospitality to them aboard their vessel.
